As with almost everyone else I cringed when he first opened his mouth, and yes I do think that he is too much of a clumsy presence in the movie and is way overdone. As the negotiations go sour, the two Jedi sneak onto a droid army invasion force landing craft and go down to Naboo where Qui-Gon runs into the completely CGI created character Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best). So all is well so far in the continuity department. Young Ben mentions in this scene that Yoda tells him to be mindful of the future, and in the audio commentary George Lucas explains that a Jedi would be trained in the temple (where Yoda is) until about eight or nine and then he will become a padawan to a Jedi Knight. Obi-Wan told Luke that Yoda trained him, but the first time you see him in Episode I, he is with Qui-Gon. This opening scene is one of the first things that caused people to question the continuity of the prequel. Two Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his young Padawan learner Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) have been sent to settle the dispute, but things don't quite go as planned.

This is part of an elaborate scheme by the future Emperor, Senator Palpatine, to gain power and a higher seat in the Republic. When the movie opens, the Trade Federation has blockaded a peaceful planet known as Naboo. It is still a while before the rise of the Empire, and Darth Vader is just an eight-year-old boy living as a slave on Tatooine. The Old Republic is entering into its twilight years and the Jedi Knights are still the guardians of peace and justice in the Republic.

As you can tell from the title, The Phantom Menace is the first installment in the six-chapter Star Wars saga. Surprisingly, this is not mentioned on the packaging for the disc, but this review will point out where they were added, and even what is in the extras disc that should have been edited back in. The DVD version of Episode I is basically the same movie that you saw in theaters, but they did edit in some of the deleted scenes for a minor "special edition". You probably already have a cemented-in opinion on how much you hate (or love) The Phantom Menace, so if you want to you can skip right past the extremely long movie review and check out how the video and audio rates (the audio, oh wow.), and then move on to the amazing set of extras on the disc. My review reflects this, as I will go through a complete breakdown of the story explaining what I like and do not like. Unlike some other people I actually like Episode I despite some of it's problems. I have been a fanatical fan since birth and I have literally grown up with the movies. To begin with let me tell you that I am probably the biggest Star Wars fan in the IGN offices. It features multiple pages with each one focusing on a specific part of the DVD be it the movie, video, audio or extras with the special features being broken up into multiple pages to better focus on the tons of goodies that you find on disc two. Since this first Star Wars DVD is truly a big event for the DVD format, and the fact that I am a super fanatical Star Wars fan and want to devote a lot of attention to the disc, I'm doing this review in a different way from the standard reviews you'd find on the site.

The second saucer is packed with deleted scenes, an absolutely excellent hour-long documentary movie, all of the web documentaries, the theatrical trailers, seven TV spots, and more. On the first disc you get the movie in a 2:35 anamorphic widescreen transfer with a Dolby Digital 5.1 EX soundtrack and an audio commentary featuring George Lucas and multiple members of the creative force.
